Our Story

Lactone Investments

We are an agrifood SME dedicated to fostering sustainable agricultural food production in
Western Kenya through climate-smart approaches. Our core mission is to leverage improved,
drought-tolerant, and virus-free cassava seeds to boost food productivity and drive economic
transformation in rural Western Kenya.

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, over 500 million people rely on cassava as a main food source. It
is a tough, drought-resistant crop that grows well even in poor soils. For the Abasuba
community
in Homa Bay County, Kenya, cassava was more than just a food—it was a way of
life. It provided income, filled homes with ugali, and was regularly traded for fish and grains at
local markets like Nyandiwa Beach.

But things changed..

In the early 2000s, farmers in Suba noticed something strange. Their cassava tubers were
turning brown and rotting from the inside. The cause? Two serious plant diseases—Cassava
Mosaic Disease (CMD)
and Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD). These diseases spread
quickly and destroyed harvests. By 2006, cassava production had dropped by almost two-thirds.

This was a heavy blow for the community and across Western Kenya, which is only worsening
with the effects of climate change. With cassava gone, families struggled to find food and earn
a living. Parents had to choose between feeding their children and paying school fees.
Once-thriving villages in Gwassi Hills, like Kisaku and Kirambo, were hit hardest. Cassava
had always been their dependable crop—but now it was disappearing.
